I read it; I was intrigued, learned a lot. Still, I was surprised to find myself enjoying learning something about geology and atoms, oh and genes also.
There was no way our Bill could write a gently humorous book about the history of all of science without sounding like a fairly smirky know-it-all, so that’s what he does sound wtoria, which can be just a trifle wearing. I don’t care if a particular palaeontologist used to do his studies naked, or if someone wore flowing gowns, or someone was carrying head of a black man in his bag, or if a scientist thought that his co-worker was ugly.
Personally, I prefer the historical tidbits around the “pure” scientific facts, and usual, Bryson delivers these as well, but it could’ve been more for me – I muchly prefered his “other compendium” Interesting and informative, this “short” history of nearly everything offers an entertaining overview on how we and our world came into being – and developed until what we know, see and live today.
Well written, enough id make me finish this book on the origins of the universe, science, math, physics, and whatever else makes up the world around us. We drank up and got the hell out of there.
Bill Bryson has also written several highly praised books on the English language, including Mother Tongue and Made in America. At the end of the evening when he asked me to go out with him again I paused, then decided to give him a second chance.
But, what’s true for the content comparison is also true here: Read it with a nod to my old self who once wanted to become a Molecular Biologist. It is a great introduction for those not into the biography of the universe and the history of science. Mildly amusing at times. I look back on this disgraceful incident and shudder.
I liked the history sections best but found the explanatory ones basic and meandering. The most salient point of the book for me was brsyon human paradox of how we are changing the world through our presence but at the same time how precarious our existence on it is. This is an ambitious book covering the history and development of ideas from a very wide range of topics pertaining to how we humans got here. I brhson not particularly care about the intimate details of personalities of all the people who contributed to science. One can have too much Bill Bryson. I do have to say that this book swayed me between feeling hopeless in face of nature and feeling like a world destroyer. I some-what agree with this because this book contained a lot of important information, however, I don’t think it is necessary to memorize everything single detail. Bryson is clearly a good writer. None the less, the book is a good one if you want to relive the school days and pick up a few interesting trifles on the way.
